Programme · The IJMB Story

An alternative pathway into the Nigerian university system.

For nearly fifty years the Interim Joint Matriculation Board has offered diligent students a credible, federally-recognised route into the second year of university — without another JAMB cycle.

The Context

Hundreds of thousands of candidates. Far fewer university seats.

Admission into higher institutions in Nigeria is a persisting bottleneck. As of June 2023, JAMB disclosed that 1.8 million candidates sat the examination in 2022, and 1.44 million passed — yet only 557,626 gained admission across the country.

That left roughly 880,000 qualified students stranded — many waiting another year, hoping for a different result.

IJMB exists for them.

A brief history.

From a 1976 intervention in the old Northern Region to a federally-recognised national pathway.

1976
Establishment

IJMB founded by ICSA

The Interim Joint Matriculation Board was established by the Interim Common Services Agency to address admission frustrations in the old Northern Region of Nigeria.

1977
First Examination

Replacing the HSCE

The first IJMB examination was held for students who had completed the post-secondary programme, replacing the Higher School Certificate Examination.

Today
National Recognition

Approved by the Federal Government

IJMB is now broader in scope — federally approved as a platform for university admission. Administered by the Institute of Education at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with representatives from JAMB, FUT Minna and other bodies.

Now
Recognised Nationwide

Recognised at Nigerian universities

IJMB certificates are recognised at Nigerian Federal, State and Private universities. Eligibility is listed in Section 2.2 of the JAMB Brochure. The NUC certifies it as an Advanced Level qualifying examination for Direct Entry into 200 level.
